The hidden cost of chargebacks

Chargebacks are one of the most frustrating things that can happen in your subscription business. You’ve delivered a service, provided support, and worked to ensure your customers have a great experience. Plus, you’ve provided clear escalation routes when things do go wrong, but still, you see chargebacks appearing in your payment gateway. It’s incredibly frustrating, but do you know how much it costs your business? Here’s everything to consider when calculating the cost of chargebacks on your bottom line. Chargeback fees You’ll pay a chargeback fee to your payment gateway every time a customer issues a chargeback against your business. These can be between $7.50 and $27.00 depending on which gateway you use. You’ll often see the fee is refunded if you win the dispute, but if you lose, you’re out for both the cost of the fee and the associated refund. Unwarranted refunds The barrier of proof to win a chargeback can often seem dauntingly high, so you’ll find yourself issuing refun...

Involuntary churn in action: Merlin Membership

We’ve written a lot recently about churn and how it can impact your business. We’ve even written a free book about  twenty ways to reduce churn and retain more customers . But recently, I involuntarily churned myself with one of my subscription services, and it was interesting to see how they handled it. I’m a theme park fan. I love the exhilaration of a high-speed rollercoaster, the fear of a hairpin turn, and the excitement of a themed attraction. To scratch this itch I have a  Merlin Membership  – it gets me into all of the UK’s most significant theme parks for a low monthly payment. Recently, however, I changed credit cards, causing my membership payment to fail – we call this  involuntary churn . I thought it’d be interesting to look at how Merlin communicated with me to try and get my membership back on track. Here’s Merlin’s dunning flow – an industry term for a series of reminders that help you to get paid. Day one Merlin was very quick to email me to ...

How fast can I start a subscription service for my business?

What is a subscription service? A subscription service is a business proposing to sell products or services on a fixed timeline, monthly or weekly – just like Netflix do. They come in one of three types- ●  Curation  is the most famous  type of subscription  offer. These can contain items like clothing, makeup, or pet accessories. These are special because the customer doesn't always know what they're getting, so surprising and delighting them is part of the experience. ●  Replenishment  subscriptions come in second place with consumers. This is a regular ordering of consumable household goods, such as household supplies or groceries. ●  Access  is the final type of subscription. Customers pay for access to a premium service or content, like free shipping, for a monthly fee. Amazon Prime and Netflix are examples. Why is adding subscriptions to your business beneficial? Subscriptions can add predictable sales results to your business. You ca...
